Stories We spent most of 2009 cruising Mexico in our Cal 39 MRK III, Citla. We're now back in San Diego and currently have the boat berthed at Half Moon Marina on Shelter Island. We purchase our 1982 Cal 39 MRK III, Island Princess, from George and Doris Hubbard and rechristened her Citla (the Nahuatl or Aztec name for 'star'). The boat was in good shape when we purchased her, having been re-powered in 2000 with a Yanmar diesel (400 hours at the time of purchase). We have since cruised Citla from San Diego along the west coast of Mexico and up into the Sea of Cortez and plan another Mexican cruise in the Fall of 2010. Some of the improvements we made prior to taking the cruise included installing new running rigging, including new 300' anchor rodes with 30' of chain for each of our two bow anchors and 250' of rode with 20' of chain for our stern lunch hook; all new standing rigging (from the chain plates to the tangs); replacing the anchor light with a new LED tri-color, anchor light, strobe combination; a new suit of sails (Quantum full battened main with 2 reef points; 130% genoa); and, new Harken roller furling gear. The existing electronics included Furuno 16 mile radar; Furuno GPS Navigator GP31; Raytheon ST 4000+ autopilot; Standard Horizon VHF radio; and, Signet wind point, wind speed, depth, speed, log and water temperature instruments. These were supplemented with ICOM VHF radios (hand held and fixed mount); hand held Garmin 76CSx GPS with marine charts from Alaska to Central America; an HP la'ptop computer with navigation software and Blue Chart data installed; and, a SSB receiver for Wx information. Added safety gear included: dual Navimo radar reflector tubes mounted at the spreaders; an ACR PLB 406 GPS; a 4 person off-shore life raft; a stocked ditch bag; complete set of paper charts for our cruising area; a pair of jack lines; and a sextant. Improvements to crew comfort included a new panelized head liner; all new black water plumbing, including a new holding tank; replacement of all port lights; addition of port light and hatch screens; and, a new Achilles inflatable dingy with a 6 hp 4-stroke outboard. Additions we'd like to make to improve our cruising would be the following: Solar panels to supplement battery charging; anchor windlass along with additional chain (~70-100' total in addition to the nylon rode); a better quality SSB receiver for weather information; and, a cruising spinnaker (to replace our symmetrical one) Top |
