Stories The hole is caused by (in my opinion) bad construction of the hull in combination with a too heavy compression of the mast. I suppose the hull will be ok if the boat is equipped with a normal mast. In a tall mast/deep keel situation it is not accepted to leave the main bulkhead loose and not connected to the bottom and hull. Thereby is the support underneath the mast insufficient. And in my case I could feel 10 -15 mm movement between the bulkhead and the hull during sailing. This caused finely a crack in the hull with leakage as a result. The hull is inside and outside locally renewed and the main bulkhead is attached to the bottom, better support stringers have been placed beneath the mast foot and connected to the stay supporters under the deck. This was an expensive job and cost me a season without sailing. But it is solid now and I have no fear anymore. I owned the boat from 2000 and replaced the VW pathfinder by a 40hp Vetus (mitsubishi). Mast is stripped and recoated. I renewed the front cabins and Main cabin. Now I have plans for renewing the kitchen coming months. Top |
